For existing terminals, retrofitting shore power is not only a planning challenge but also costly. Ports that are already equipped for shore power have often carried out detailed analyses of the incoming ships in order to determine the connection positions as precisely as possible and save costs. The SPOs were then usually installed as fixed systems in the quay every 100 to 120 metres.

Today, however, new and larger ships call at these harbours, which have the cable supply system installed more amidships on board. The SPOs can often no longer be reached. Whether new shore power connections need to be planned or existing ones extended, the expansion with stationary SPOs is so costly that alternative solutions are required.

When planning new terminals, stationary SPOs are taken into account at an early stage. However, as the extension length of the cable feed system on board the ships is limited to 35-55 metres, this means that a stationary SPO must be installed every 30-50 metres. For a terminal of approx. 400 metres, 8-15 SPOs must therefore be installed.
All SPOs must be connected to switchgear in the distribution station. These are immense costs. Connecting the cables (10 kg/m) coming from the ship is an enormous amount of work for the harbour staff. Several people are needed to handle the cable. An alternative solution is a shore power supply with mobile SPOs. With the igus® e-chain® technology for long travel distances, distances of up to 800 metres can be covered.
