platform-art© is an advanced robotics laboratory for feed-through testing of navigation and control systems prior to launch into space. In space missions, the guidance, navigation and control system is responsible for determining the location of the spacecraft at all times. The laboratory uses the latest technologies such as a 3-metre wingspan robot installed on 15-metre rails, a second robot with a 1-metre wingspan for scenarios involving two spacecraft, a lighting system and time synchronisation as well as communication and data upload systems. Previously, a large, 15 metre long well with a rail was required for the robot to move around on. Although this configuration was functional, it posed a number of problems: Moving the robot controller required more power consumption and raised costs. In addition, the 2 metre deep pit was a serious safety risk for the employees.
