3D scanner systems for non-destructive testing of building facades

How WaveScan's proprietary technology, with the help of drygear® Apiro®, makes facade inspections possible in tropical climates

WaveScan specialises in the research and development of electromagnetic-based 3D scanning systems and advanced AI algorithms. The technology is based on nearly a decade of research and development in wireless microwave and millimetre wave sensors and enables high-resolution, transparent structural images for non-destructive testing (NDT) applications.

The company used the drygear® Apiro modular gearbox system to assemble a 2D fan system equipped with our wireless microwave sensor for repeatable surface scans. This system is used commercially, including for the inspection of building facades and concrete structures.

Profile

  • What was needed: A flat linear robot
  • Requirements: Lightweight (<7 kg), dustproof, heat-resistant up to 40 degrees, modular and scalable, have long operating time
  • Industry: Construction/mechanical and plant engineering
  • Success for the customer: Automatic facade inspection under difficult conditions

Problem

WaveScan was faced with the challenge of developing a technically demanding, yet cost-effective solution for creating a linear robot.
A special requirement was to take into account the diverse and complex structures and conditions of building facades in a warm, tropical region.
igus® was not only able to provide advice here, but also impressed with its products.

Solution

Apiro® stands for affordable gearbox solutions and flexible, customer-specific solutions.
To meet the requirements, the inspection system is designed to be lightweight and adaptable to different platforms such as gondolas, boom lifts and rope benders.
In addition, the system is scalable thanks to the expandable drygear® Apiro gearbox system. The modular gearbox system offers a wide range of products based on the combination of various designs on the input and output of the gearboxes, different gear ratios and a wide range of accessories. The 3D scanner system can be flexibly adjusted in size, depending on the specific requirements of the respective inspection.

Products used

Easily build an individual automation system

Possible applications can be in the

  • packaging,
  • food,
  • medical industries and many more.
Lane adjustments, pusher tasks, gearboxes with different gear ratios, slewing rings and rotary axes can be used there. The modular gearbox system can be motorised or used for manual adjustments.
With our Apiro® iDeas we have put together a portfolio of ideas.
